6 Nations 2013 Know your enemy: England

Enjoy!

Last year I wrote a preview of Italy v England in Rome and predicted a tight, tense encounter between a rookie England team and their vastly experienced Italian counterparts.

As predictions go, it was spot on, with England scraping a win by virtue of a try from Chargedown Charlie Hodgson. Twelve months on and so much has changed for the English. Last year it was a new team with a new coach and a new captain. So much was unknown but the signs were already there that England would be tough to beat and so it has proved. Runners up in the Six Nations last year, the team has continued to evolve and is now on a winning streak that no one expects to end this weekend.

The Azzurri will undoubtedly be competitive , but even if Sergio Parisse had been available I doubt even the most optimistic Italian fan would have anticipated victory. Italy’s best hope is that England take them lightly but with the pragmatic Cumbrian, Stuart Lancaster, in charge I doubt very much that the England players will be allowed to get complacent

The Italian scrum wobbled badly against Wales and England will look to take advantage and if they get front-foot ball on a regular basis I think the tries will come. It certainly won’t be easy – it never is against Italy – but England are pretty relentless this year and they’ll be disappointed with anything other than a good win.

On topic: what a difference between the "pragmatic" Cumbrian (i'd rather say, the focused, no-excuses Cumbrian) and our forgiving, "psycologist" (as we like to say) Pirenean ...
